"Mail call!" Johnny Wright yelled out. Johnny is ¶ ||\\||SYNC’s manager.

"YAY!" Chris replied. He always loved reading the goofy, yet flattering, letters all their fans sent them.

"There is one important letter I want all of you guys to read together," Johnny said seriously.

"Okay," they all responded.

"Mommy? Can you help me write a letter?" asked the sweet, 6-year old, Angel, from her hospital bed.

"Sure! Who do you want to write to? Grandma? Daddy? I’m sure they both miss you so much since we’re so far away from them," replied her mother.

"No. I can call them any time. I want to write a letter to ¶ ||\\||SYNC. They’re my favorite group."

"Okay. What do you want me to write?" her mother said sounding a little surprised.

Dear ¶ ||\\||SYNC,

Hi! My name is Angel, and I’m 6-years old. I am a very big fan of yours. I love all of your songs, especially "This I Promise You." All of you are so cute. You guys are all so talented. I wish I could meet you, but I’m not sure if that’s possible. You see, I have a disease. The doctors aren’t sure what I have so they don’t have a cure, and they don’t know how long I’ll live. I hope somehow, someway, I can meet you guys because you all seem so wonderful and fun to be with. I hope to see you soon.

Love your # 1 fan,

Angel

Her mother’s eyes started to tear. She didn’t know how long she had left to be with her baby girl.

"Wow!" JC said after reading the letter. All of the guys seemed touched by this 6-year old’s letter.

"We have to go see this girl," Justin said. "Quick! Before she dies. You heard what she said! She could die at any time!" Justin said partly jokingly and partly serious.

"Shut up, Justin! This is so sad," Lance commented.

"No, duh!" Chris exclaimed. Joey had been unusually quiet. He was the one usually talking, but for one of the first times, he was speechless. He was still in shock from what he had just read. "Hey! Look at Joey. He’s quiet," Chris joked.

"What? What," Joey said getting back to real life. After talking about the letter for a while, they decided they would go see Angel as soon as possible, despite their jam-packed schedule. They told Johnny and, he agreed. The letter had touched his heart too.

¶ ||\\||SYNC’s tour bus pulled up in front of Cooper Hospital. There weren’t any fans or reporters. The last thing they wanted was a bunch of cameras with them while they went up to Angel. JC was apprehensive because he didn’t like hospitals because he hated needles. The reason why he agreed to come was because of the letter. The letter had truly touched his heart. He really wanted to meet Angel. They asked the front desk what room Angel was in. The woman was an old lady, so she didn’t recognize who they were.

"Room 176," she replied. "It’s on the fourth floor." The group walked to the elevator. Joey had a bunch of balloons in his hands, and Lance had candy. Chris was holding the toys. Justin and JC brought flowers. The door was closed when they reached her room. Knock, knock!

"Come in," they heard the angelic voice speak.

"SURPRISE!!!!" they all yelled when they burst into the door.

"AH!" Angel screamed in fright. Then, she realized who it was. "Oh my goodness! You’re ¶ ||\\||SYNC! That means you got my letter! Wow! This is so great!" Angel seemed so beatific that it wasn’t palpable that she was sick. They almost thought that the letter was a hoax, but they learned that it wasn’t when they saw the IV attached to her arm for the first time.

"Hi Angel," they all replied in unison. Joey gave her the balloons first.

"Here you go Angel," Joey told her.

"Thank you," she said sheepishly. Then, Lance gave her the candy, and Christ handed her the set of tour marionettes. Justin and JC gave her the bouquet of roses.

"Special roses for a very special person," JC said to her. JC didn’t really know what to think. He felt a special bond between Angel and him. The only problem was that he didn’t know what the bond was. Could it have been that he loved her like a daughter because his parents had divorced when he was young? It was a possibility. He wasn’t quite sure, but he knew something was there. Her mother sat there quietly as her heart melted. She was so pleased to see that her daughter was happy. It had been months since she saw her smile. She was so delighted ¶ ||\\||SYNC had come to meet her precious daughter.

"Hi, I’m Karen, Angel’s mom," she said as she introduced herself.

"Hi, I’m JC," JC said.

"I’m Chris."

"I’m Joey, and this is Justin and Lance." They all shook hands with her and then sat down.

"Can you guys sing for me?" Angel requested.

"Sure! What’s your favorite song," JC responded.

"I love ‘This I Promise You.’ " It’s such a pretty song."

"Great choice," Justin said. They started to sing the song a cappella. It sounded great.

When the visions around you,

Bring tears to your eyes,

And all that surrounds you are secrets and lies.

I’ll be your strength.

I’ll give you hope.

Keeping your faith when it’s gone.

The one you should call was standing here all along.

And I will take,

You in my arms, and hold you right where you belong.

‘Til the day my life is through,

This I promise you.

This I promise you.

*I’ve loved you forever,

In lifetimes before*

And I promise you never

Will you hurt anymore.

I give you my word

I give you my heart.

This is a battle we’ve won.

And with this vow,

Forever has now begun.

Just close your eyes,

Each loving day,

And know this feeling won’t go away.

‘Til the day my life is through,

This I Promise You.

This I Promise you.

Over and over I fall,

When I hear you call.

Without you in my life, baby, I just wouldn’t be living at all.

"That was so good," Angel said after they finished.

"Thank You," they all said back. They sat down once again and started to talk with Angel.

"So, what’s your favorite subject in school?" JC asked her.

"Math is my favorite subject. It’s so easy. Then, I like English and music because I like to sing." She started to sing "God Must Have Spent A Little More Time on You," and then they joined in. It sounded great. JC started to love Angel as if she were his own daughter. She seemed so… perfect to him. If he could, he would give up his whole career to make Angel feel better and to make whatever disease she had, go away. JC didn’t want to see Angel die. Even though he had only known her for a few hours, it seemed like he knew her for a *lifetime and in lifetimes before*. They said they had to go because they had a sound check and rehearsal. Angel went to the concert, later that night, and had a blast.

Angel had kept in touch with ¶ ||\\||SYNC. She had even seen them a few more times. JC had come to the hospital the most. When their tour finished, JC came the day after. He just had to see her. JC went to the hospital when he should have been working. Any fan that knew this would have been surprised because JC was known to be the one to work the most. Angel was a very special person in JC’s life. JC became Angel’s favorite ¶ ||\\||SYNCer because he visited her the most. The other guys loved her too, but there was a special bond between JC and Angel that none of the other guys had, but they still went to the hospital with JC, occasionally. When JC came to the hospital, Angel and JC would talk about life in general. She talked to him about what he was doing in his life and she told him what her goals were in life. JC wrote multiple songs for her and one of them even got into their third album. Also, on her better days, JC would take her out to places or they would just on walks around the hospital. She was so happy when he came. One crucial day, 6 months later, changed it all.

Ring, ring, ring, ring screamed the phone. "Hello?" JC answered.

"Hi is JC there?" Karen asked.

"This is JC speaking. Karen?"

"Oh, JC thank God! —"

"What’s the matter? What’s wrong with Angel? Is she okay?"

"No, she’s not okay. While she was sleeping, she slipped into a coma. The doctors are saying that she only has two weeks, at the most, to live."

"Oh my goodness! This is horrible. Hold on for a second." JC told Justin, Chris, Joey, and Lance to get over to where he was. They were all in the studio, so they weren’t far away.

"What’s up, JC," Chris asked not knowing the horrible news that lay ahead of him.

"It’s about Angel. Her mom’s on the phone right now, and Angel’s in a coma. She only has two weeks to live. Do you guys think we should go there? I think we should."

"Definitely," they all responded.

"Okay, great!" JC went back to the phone and told Karen that they would come to the hospital as soon as they could. They immediately called Johnny when they were off the phone. They told him to book a flight and explained everything to him. JC wanted to have all of the guys there to support him. He knew how wouldn’t be able to hold up if something bad happened to Angel, and he couldn’t depend on Karen because she would probably be even more distraught. He needed the guys and knew that they cared for Angel, too.

They booked a flight for the next day. Everything else was booked up. At least it was better than two weeks. When they got to the airport, they got into two cabs and rushed to the hospital as fast as they could.

They got to the hospital and rushed to her room. She wasn’t there so they checked with the front office. "She was moved into the intensive care unit," the lady responded. They hurried up to the unit and soon found Angel lying unconciously in the hospital bed. They felt so depressed seeing her helpless. They felt that they couldn’t help her in any way. She looked too pallor. She almost looked like an oversized porcelain doll, fragile and pale.

They were allowed to see her. Chris went first. They were only allowed in separately. Then Joey walked inside the room. And Lance went next. Justin went in second to last. JC went last because he felt sick seeing all the tubes and IV’s attached to her. He couldn’t bare to see Angel in such horrible condition. JC quavered as he walked into the room. The last time he had seen her, she seemed perfectly fine. She was in the hospital just because the doctors didn’t know what she had and didn’t know what would happen to her. He finally stood up and went into the room. JC had almost spent an hour with her. The guys had only spent about 20 minutes all together. The guys didn’t have that strong bond with Angel as JC did with Angel. Though they cared, they didn’t care as much as JC did.

Right before he left he said, "Please don’t go Angel." JC’s strength was receding. You don’t know how much you mean to all of us. Only go if you have to. Please don’t try and fight just because of us. You don’t have to hold on if you can’t any longer. You’ll always be with us in our hearts and in heaven." Angel must have heard JC, somehow, because as he was just about to walk out the door, her heart stopped. Everyone ran into the room to see what happened. There was no reviving her. Angel was dead. They were all terribly sad, but they all knew it was for the better. Now Angel could be where she belonged, in heaven and with God. "I know I will see her again someday and will never forget her passion and spirit," JC thought to himself. "Now, at least, she is out of all her pain and suffering. She can rest in peace." They all left the room silently and prayed that Angel would be safe where she was. JC was terribly upset. HE felt as though someone had just ripped out his heart for no particular reason. "It’s not fair," he thought. "Why did Angel have to go? Why does anyone have to go? It’s just not fair," he thought and repeated to himself. JC and Karen cried the most knowing that they would never be able to see Angel ever again. They would never forget her. She touched the lives of all the people she met.

¶ Lyrics to If Only Through Heaven’s Eyes¶

I never thought you were a fair weather friend
You never let me down, you're true to the end
You’re in the darkest hour, when all was lost
Somehow you left the light on
You faced the wrong and showed the world a thing or two
Stood up for me, for you
And you should know

Some say it wasn’t worth the things we went through
I say it ain’t worth losing you
I hope you know how much you’ve changed all our lives
Someday you’ll see if only through heaven’s eyes

I still remember the things that you said
I keep your words alive I could never forget
Cause in the final hour you made me proud
So proud that I could know you
You told the world its time that they believed in you
You stood for right and truth
And you should know

Some say it wasn’t worth the things we went through
I say it ain’t worth losing you
I hope you know how much you’ve changed all our lives
Someday you’ll see if only through heaven’s eyes

Only through heaven’s eyes ...

And so we can’t forget
We’ve got to keep remembering them all
Once he took the fall
They did it for us all
And we should learn from it
Stand up if you believe in it
You’ve got to face the world...be strong

Some say it wasn’t worth the things we went through
I say it ain’t worth losing you
I hope you know how much you’ve changed all our lives
Someday you’ll see if only through heaven’s eyes

Some say it wasn’t worth the things we went through
I say it ain’t worth losing you
I hope you know how much you’ve changed all our lives
Someday you’ll see if only through heaven’s eyes.

"And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no
more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more
pain; for the former things are passed away."
Revelation 21:4
