Morning came too soon and JC found himself curled against her. In the night
he'd woken up and found her shivering from the cool air in the room so he'd
curled her up against his body and covered them with the blanket, but now
that the morning sun was on them he only thought about getting away from
her rather than cherishing those quiet moments like he would with other lovers
Finding that she wasn't awake yet he pulled away from her and grabbed up
his clothes. He pulled his jeans on and pulled his shirt into place, looked
at Farzana once more then moved out of the room. A shower would wait until
later, but he was sure that he could get some mouthwash or something for
the cottom mouth he was now feeling.
"Jesus Melinda," JC squinted as Melinda found him in the downstairs hallway.
"Yeah...alive," he said, "I think. I mean the last time I checked..." He
pulled his phone out and looked at the time. "...sleeping in until ten o'clock
wasn't a crime."
"You feeling better?" she asked cocking her head to the side to stare at
Sometimes he hated her for the looks she gave him. She could be worse than
his mother for checking up on him. Last night's talk hadn't surprised him,
but her concern this morning was really starting to worry him. He wasn't
sure that he needed to a babysitter.
JC scratched his hands through his hair then rubbed his face trying to keep
his anger from coming out in the wrong way. "A little."
"How is Farzana?" Melinda asked.
He knew she was just trying to help him out, but he wasn't sure that he wanted
everyone in the group to know what was going on between them. Everyone and
their mother had gotten involved in his relationship with Bobbie and he wasn't
sure that he wanted them involved in whatever was going on with Farzana and
he didn't want them to make it to a "relationship" before he knew the definition
of what they were to each other.
He tried to brush off his paranoid feelings of her getting into his business
and smiled a little, just to let her know that things were ok between them.
"She's still sleeping. I thought I'd come down and clean up a little and
maybe see if I can get some studio time today."
"Blaque is in there today," Melinda explained, "Tommorrow I think there is
open time though."
"How can you party and then be so chipper in the morning?" he asked with
attitude. He wondered how should could match them drink for drink and still
be in business mode at this time of the morning.
"Coffee babes." She smiled then stuck out her tongue at him. "There is some
still in there when you get the inkling."
"Inkling?" JC smiled, "I thought I was the writer in the family."
"Sue me for plagerism or something. I had a call with some writers this morning
so I started using big words." She stretched her back and then pulled her
hair out of her ponytail and put it back up again, "Someone used it so I
guess I stole it." She looked at her watch, "I need to call in to Jive this
morning so I gotta run. I'll see you around tomorrow. OK?"
"Ok sweetie," he said and hugged her.
"If you need me call my cell hon," she whispered as he hugged her, "Take
a chance on Farzana. I think you guys are good for each other."
In the kitchen he found Meredith sitting on the counter with Justin standing
next to her. They were sharing an orange, him feeding it to her, and being
all lovey-dovy which made him even more unsure about Farzana. He wanted that
with her, but he couldn't see it happening.
"Hey Jace," Meredith said looking over and making Justin tense.
"Hey," he said, "Sorry to interupt, but coffee is calling my name."
"You're not interupting," Meredith said, "BeeDee was just about to see about
us getting some lunch before I have to fly out."
"Where are you off to?" JC opened up the cabinet and grabbed out a mug then
went to the coffee maker and poured himself a cup.
"I've got an audition in LA for a movie," she said taking one last piece
of orange from Justin. "The producer from the movie I worked on before was
looking for someone so he remembered meeting me and called and set up an
audition for me."
"That's great girl." JC went and grabbed the milk out of the fridge and poured
some into the cup. "I'd wish you luck, but I don't want to jinx you."
"Thanks," she said, "I think."
JC yawned then took a sip of coffee.
"Did you sleep last night?" Meredith asked a moment later.
"He was with Farzana," Justin said, "Sleeping wasn't the reason for him being
"BeeDee!" Meredith said, "That's mean."
"Mean?" he asked, "Don't tell me that you didn't expect him not to be with
her last night."
"I wasn't up there fucking her," JC said. He threw his coffee in the sink
and stalked out of the room.
"Jace," Meredith called after him, "He didn't mean anything about it."
JC took the steps by twos and moved into Johnny's office with a rush. He
would have liked to have let her sleep, but now, after talking to Justin
he wanted to take her home and away from everyone there. They weren't a couple
and he didn't want people to start thinking that.
"Good, you're up," he said coming around the corner as she was letting out
the air from the areo-bed.
"Good morning to you too," she said.
"Let's get out of here," he said, "I need a shower and I'm sure you want
She looked shocked for a moment and he knew the reason. All the affection
that he'd shown her the night before had been instantly replaced with a coolness
that he thought that was appropriate for the moment. He needed to get out
of the compound and get his head back on straight.
"There we go," JC said as he pushed the door of the condo open.
"Ugh," she said as they entered and went towards the kitchen. "I need a shower."
JC had been mostly emotionless that morning and kept that up when she spoke
to him. "Go ahead and take one. I need to check my messages and make some
calls." He pulled his phone from his pocket and began to dial, moving his
attention from her to the object in his hand.
When she had agreed to come to Orlando she hadn't expected to be the center
of his attention, but after the events of the night before she had thought
that she'd at least get a little more attention from him, but it seemed to
be the exact opposite. Realizing that the fairy tale friendship wasn't what
they were going to have and that he was almost cold to her that morning wasn't
giving her ego a boost. "Ok," was all that she said.
"Alex is going to come out from LA today to do some work with you," He spoke
more to the room than to her as if she was just there to hear his news instead
of him delivering a message to her. "He should be here tonight so we can
start working tomorrow."
"I thought you were going to produce my album," she said wondering why he
was pushing her away. It wasn't just the physical space that had been between
them since they'd woken up that morning, but the idea of him bringing someone
else into the studio was just another way to keep them from talking or being
He looked up at her and held his phone in his hand. "I asked him to come
out because I think he'll have a lot of great insight to give you."
"Ok." Farzana knew that if she stood there any longer that she would make
him upset. She could see the anger in his eyes and she wondered if she was
the cause of that. She couldn't figure out if she had done something wrong,
but she was begining to think that she should plan on getting a plane ticket
home sooner than later. She wanted to stay, but more and more it seemed that
she was getting in the way. "I'm gonna go take a shower."
It was a shock to hear his voice next. She almost thought that she'd been
dismissed by him for the time being. "We should think about getting some
Farzana turned to go up the stairs then turned back. "Sounds good to me."
She tried not to think about things too much. She needed to take her shower
and get away from him a little and maybe that would send things back to normal.
"What's wrong?" he asked.
"Nothing." She lied thinking that if she told the truth she might look ungreatful
for the help he was giving her.
"You sure?" he asked.
"Good. I'll see ya in a while then."
Farzana held her breath as she made her way upstairs and into the bathroom.
She didn't grab out clothes when she went in the room, thinking that JC would
stay downstairs and a towel for clothes would be ok.
The shower water was warmed after leaving it on for a moment and she stepped
under the spray washing away not only the slight headache that she had along
with her drinking, but also the feel of JC's hands being on her the night
She was in the middle of washing her hair when the shower door opened and
JC stepped in. She quickly covered herself with her hands and gave him a
shocked look, "What are you doing?"
"I came in here to apoligize," he said.
"Couldn't you have waited?" she asked.
"No." He stepped forward and took her hands away from her body to look at
her. His eyes were soft and kind to her in their exploration of her body.
He didn't stare at one spot for a long time, but when his eyes met her's
again there was pleasure showing in them. "I'm sorry for this morning. I
wasn't sure how I should treat this situation, but I decided that I needed
to tell you--" His hands began to explore her body slowly moving the soap
that was coming down from her hair over her body.
"Why were you being so mean earlier?" she asked innocently.
"I'm sorry." He leaned and kissed her lips for a moment then pulled back.
"You taste like soap."
"Don't change ths subject," she warned. She should have moved back. She should
have covered herself and left him there, but the look in his eyes kept her
standing there listening to her. "I want to know why you were so mean earlier."
JC sighed as if the question annoyed him. "Zana, we're standing here naked
and about to share something completely amazing and you're asking me questions
that I should be answering later."
"Josh," she said, "You asked me what was wrong earlier and I didn't give
you an answer. You treated me fine last night then this morning you treated
me like a lepper. Were you just not sure how to handle this morning?"
He stood there and watched her for a moment, slipped an arm around her to
pull her closer. "I'm not going to promise you that it won't happen again.
I like you. I really do, but I can't be in a relationship that goes public
again. It ripped my last one apart and I don't want that to happen to you
"You and me?" she asked, "Is there a you and me? This morning I don't think
that there was you and me. I was almost planning to get a plane ticket home
this morning. I know that we were drunk last night and that might explain
away all of our feelings towards each other, but I don't think that it was
just that. I think there is more there than just horniness."
JC's hands moved to her face and tipped her head back to wash away the shampoo
in her hair before he moved her so that he could look at her again. "I want
there to be..." He moved his hands and wiped water from her face. "You have
to know before hand that whatever relationship is going to be between us
isn't going to be fairy tale. It isn't going to be perfect, but it's what
I have to give and I want that to be enough."
The only answer that she could give him was a smile.
