Some Good Reasons 5

"Joe?"  She stepped into the living room just as he was turning off the overhead light and flipping on the two lamps that bookended the couch.  "What are you up to?"

"Just relaxing," he said and made himself comfortable before he reached a hand out to her.  "Come on over here and relax with me."

She moved slowly, but soon he found her sitting on the couch next to him yawning a bit as she settled back against the cushions.

"Long day?" he asked.

"Yeah," she said, "You were there with me for it."

Joey nodded and moved his arm to lay across the back of the couch so he could massage the back of her neck with his hand.  She hadn't moved over to snuggle with him so he figured that he'd get her to move slowly.

"Wanna talk about it?" he asked.

"About what?" she turned towards him.

"Something is going on with you.  I know."  He took a deep breath and held it.  "I can tell."

She sat quietly for a long time, just staring off into space and letting him massage her neck.  "I miss you," she said, "And I'm not just saying that because you've been out of town.  Things have changed with us and I'm feeling--I'm feeling like a little old lady."

"Little old lady?" He couldn't help but to laugh at that comment.  In his eyes she was far from being old which made the comment tickle his funny bone.  "Kel.  You're not old and definitely not a little old lady."

"Well I feel like one."

"Why?" he asked.

"Because if it were just you and me here we'd have been half naked fucking on the floor by now," she said.

His jaw dropped.  It was true.  When they'd been younger and had gotten time to spend alone most of it had been spent half dressed or undressed making love as many times as they could fit in--especially when he'd been flying back and forth to Europe all the time.

"I would be putting the moves on you right now, but after a long day of watching the kids and dealing with our families and the guys all I want to do is put on a pair of pajamas and fall asleep as soon as possible."

"I could suggest a compromise," he said.

"Like what?" she asked looking at him with these sexy sleepy flirty eyes that he hadn't seen her use in months.

He smiled thinking of all the ways he could impress her.  "Massage, movie and a bottle of wine in bed with me?"

"Do I really have to move up to the bedroom?" she asked with a yawn.

"No," he said.  He pushed up off the couch.

"Joe--"

He smiled down at her then leaned and kissed her.  "I'll be back in a minute."

Moving into the kitchen Joey didn't reach to turn on the overhead lights.  He moved into the pantry and found a bottle of red after a moment of picking out two bottles of olive oil that was stored on the shelf next to the bottles of wine.  The corkscrew was taken out of the drawer near the sink without too much noise, but taking the cork out of the bottle took a moment in the dark.  He found two wine glasses before thinking about going back into the living room.

When he came around the corner back into the living room Kelly was already half asleep on the couch.  She'd turned in her seat a little and was curled into a ball now.

"Kel?" he asked.

"Hmm?"

He put the bottle of wine down on the table then set down the glasses.  "Maybe we should get you up to bed."

"No," she said tiredly, "I want to spend time with you."

"You're wasted," he said.

"I didn't drink much--"

"No," he said and moved to put an arm around her back and one under her legs to pick her up.  "I know you didn't drink that much.  You're so tired."  He moved her weight in his arms a little and moved to kiss her forehead.  "Via da al letto con lei il mio amore." (Off to bed with you my love.)

"I want to stay up and spend time with you Joe," she said covering a yawn.

"It's ok Kel," Joey said and moved around the couch towards the stairs.

"The lights," she said.

"It's ok," Joey said, "Getting you up to bed is more important."

"No," she said, "I've missed you--missed being with you--I wanted tonight to be special--for us to--" She yawned.

"But you're tired Kel," he said.

"I'm always tired," she said.

"We'll spend time together later."

"No now," she said and moved to kiss him just as he started up the stairs still carrying her.

He struggled for a bit then pulled his lips away from hers.  "I'm gonna drop you if you keep that up."

"I'm sorry Joe," she said, "I just wanted to be with you."

Joey smiled.  "Domani il mio amore." (Tomorrow my love.)

"Not tomorrow," she said, "Right now."

"You want to make love on the stairs?" he asked with a wiggle of his eyebrows.

"No," she said and slapped at his shoulder, "Don't make fun of me."

"I'm not making fun," he said then caught the real look of hurt in her eyes.  He let her legs slip down so that she could stand on the stair above him.  He wrapped his arms around her and held her there for a moment while she swore at him.

"Sono idiota. Sono una poco vecchia signora ed avrei dovuto sapere." (I am an idiot. I'm a little old lady and should have known.)

"You're not an idiot," Joey said, "And you're not a little old lady."

"Well then what am I?" she asked.

"A very sexy--"  He leaned and kissed her, "Molto erotico."

"I just want to make love to you," she said, "I want it to be like it used to be--you and me and--"

"Kel--"

"What?"

"You're never going to make love to me if we stand here on the steps talking about it," he said.

"Is it sad that we have to talk about making love to each other before we actually do it?" she asked.

"No," he said, "At least if you're not in the mood I'll know."

"I'm never not in the mood," she said, "That's the standing status of our relationship.  You should know that."

"Ok," he said with a nod and a smile, "So I'm guessing that this conversation needs to end so we can get upstairs?"

"Yeah," she said and turned around on the stairs, moving her hand back to catch his as she went.

His hands were gentle with her that night.  As he pulled her shirt away from her body he smoothed his hands over her, caressing her and cherishing her.  He normally was a fairly romantic guy when it came to making love to his wife, but that night he was even more attentive.

Their lovemaking that night was like nothing they'd experienced before.  Normally they were fairly intense in their love making, but that night there was a connection there that they hadn't experienced in a while.  Kelly had clung to him, had called out his name, and he'd found tears in her eyes when she'd climaxed and it wasn't just from the intense experience.  The look on her face was one of fear, as if she was cling onto something that she thought she might not experience again.

"Your heartbeat is going wild," he said as his hand slid across her chest about an hour or so after they'd made love for the third time.  He was exhausted, but not sleepy and had been lying next to her with an arm curled under his head lying so that he could caress her belly lazily knowing that she liked to feel him next to her even in her sleep.  They were lying in the mess of covers with the lights out, but neither of them had gone to sleep just yet.

"It is?" she asked and put her hand to her heart.  "I don't know why."

"It was beating like that earlier too," he said.

"Well," she said, "Joe that's gonna happen when two people--"

"I meant before," he said, "When we were standing on the stairs."  He closed his eyes for a moment then opened them again, "You acted like you were nervous with me."

There was a long pause before she spoke again.  His hand went back to her chest and caressed her skin again and felt her pulse raise again.

"I am," she said slowly.  Her hand moved his hand away from her skin and she pulled the covers up over her naked body.  "A little."

"Nervous?" he asked and turned towards her so he was lying on his side watching her.  "Why?  Why would you be nervous of me?  I thought we'd done this enough times to have it be--not an expected thing, but at least a comfortable thing."

"I don't know," she licked her lips.  "It's been a while since we've made love."  She took a few deep breaths.  "We haven't been that into each other lately because of your work and the kids--And I know that it's your fault or my fault--It's just how things are.  When it didn't happen the night you got home I got girlie and silly and immediately thought that something was wrong."

Joey's heart got caught in his throat.  He never had thought that something so simple like letting her sleep could mess her up in the head.  He just prayed that he could undo the damage and quick.  "Nothing was wrong," Joey said, "I came back into the bedroom after putting the kids to bed and you'd fallen asleep and I wasn't going to wake you up to ask you about THAT."  He moved his hand down her arm and took her hand in his, "I know you're working hard around the house chasing after the kids and I knew that you'd stayed up so you could see me the other night, but I know when and where to make love to you and the other night wouldn't have been the right time."

"Ok," she said.

"Are you sure?" he asked.

She nodded again and moved to snuggle up against him.  "I'm sorry for being girlie."

Joey cuddled her against him.  "I would hate for you to turn manly on me.  I've got enough guys in my life."

"Honey, I wouldn't tell anyone that."

"Why not?" he said with a lisp imitating a flambouyantly gay person.  "You know that whole Bobby what's his face from the Anna Nicole show was at the taping in LA and he was so luxurious."

Kelly laughed, "Honey, stop that.  It's mean."

"Oh come on," he said, "You know that guy is funny."

"Actually he's kind of pathetic," she said, "Most the people we know in LA are pathetic--except JC and Farzana of course and Tony and Mark and David and Karen and Melissa and--"

"I get the picture," he said and leaned and kissed her.  "I'll be nice now."

"Thank you," she said.

"I'm sorry for being late the other night."

"You can make it up to me now," she said.

"Is this about that whole standing status that you're a hornball?" he asked.

"I never said that," she said, "I just said that you're my husband and making love to you would never be a burden or upset me."

"Well in that case--"  He pulled the sheet away from her body and moved to kiss her.
